Oil filters with fabric filter medium
Oil filter cartridges with non-woven filtering medium are used as fine filters and installed in a by-pass method in the engine oil system. They are designed for trapping the smallest fractions of contaminants of size appr. 1 μm, which get through the filter media in full flow filters. Such small particles are not harmful to the engine, if their concentration is low. However, during exploitation, the amount of such particles increases. They increase the density of the oil, which starts to resemble polishing paste. The non-woven media have density several times higher than those made out of filtering paper. The ability to trap contaminants, also called „absorptivity”, is also better. The oil flowing through the maze of micro channels in a few centimeters thick non-woven is filtered thoroughly and then goes to the oil sump where it is once more sucked in by the oil pump.
